CRITERIA FOR INTERIM PASTOR
1. Spiritual Background
a. Heart of Shepherd and Servant
b. Strong faith firmly grounded in the belief in a triune God – Creator, Son, and Holy Spirit
c. Commitment to the sacraments of Communion and Baptism
d. Slow to judge
e. Ability to provide in depth spiritual instruction
2. Role of Interim Pastor
a. Called to be an Interim Pastor as a ministry in and of itself
b. Experience with guiding churches in understanding and preserving its history as a step in
helping the church determine it current and future identities
c. Experience in and demonstrated ability to grow the church and move the church forward
d. Experience in and demonstrated ability to lead the church in preparing for a new relationship
with a new Senior Pastor
e. Insight in and ability to provide a fresh perspective during the Pastoral search process
f. Skill in teaching and guiding the Congregation on how to communicate and dialogue with
one another
g. Ability to inspire and challenge church members to move the church forward
h. Ability to objectively evaluate and manage competing interests and demands
i. Skills in problem-solving, conflict resolution and reconciliation
3. MCC-DC
a. Demonstrated an interest in and familiarity with MCC-DC
b. Experience leading a large church
c. Experience leading a racially and ethnically diverse church
d. Experience with and accepting of a diversity of denominational backgrounds (e.g. Catholic,
Methodist, Baptist)
e. Experience with urban churches
4. Other
a. Demonstrated involvement and interest in community and outreach work
b. Able to begin within the optimal timeframe
